Located
in the sub-region of Eastbrook (Pemberton), Thella Estate was identified early by Western
Australian viticulture pioneers as one of the best patches of dirt in the state
for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir due to a complex and specific interaction
of environmental conditions including: relatively cool climate; deep red,
loamy, gravel soil; high rainfall and altitude (250 metres above sea level).
Thella Estate has become renowned in the area as a premium small batch winery and our vines have supplied some of the state’s
finest labels since the 1990s and its ‘Hill Block’ Chardonnay has a reputation
for producing exceptional quality fruit. The estate has produced boutique wine as Below
& Above since 2013, under the direction of renowned Western Australian
contract winemaker, Bruce Dukes.
Our Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot is taken from naturally low yield vines, and uses only the best five per cent of the 34 hectares under vine, creating distinctly ‘small batch’, precious boutique wines from WA.
Proprietors of this small batch winery, John and Evdokia Klepec, have worked with Bruce Dukes for five years to honour the site’s history using new world winemaking, and bring its rich legacy for varietally correct, world-class, fine wine to market.
As part of this campaign, 6.6 hectares were replanted to Gingin Chardonnay; and coveted 114, 115, 777 and G8V3 Pinot clones; along with 1.2 hectares of new, close planted (1 x 1.5 metre) 667 Pinot, and 181 and Q45v14 Merlot clones.
Thella Estate applies sustainable viticultural and agricultural techniques wherever possible without compromising the quality of produce, to minimise impact on the environment.
Nothing is overlooked and no corners cut, we believe that this style of small batch winemaking guarantees rarity, quality of origin, outstanding fruit and winemaking.
